Radiation Oncology, Central Alabama Cancer Section; Proton Therapy Center A Medical Dosimetrist working at the UAB Proton Center would understand the characteristics and clinical relevance of radiation oncology and proton therapy treatment.
They would develop and implement proton therapy treatment plans; know and understand the correct usage of immobilization devices, have an understanding of field arrangements and other treatment parameters; design and construct beam modifying devices for optimal dose delivery; and calculate doses for therapeutic cancer treatments.
They respond to the unique needs of pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients as the need arises.
Proton International at UAB is the first and only proton therapy center in the state of Alabama.
The center is designed to treat a variety of cancers, including:
brain and neurological tumors, breast, head and neck, liver, lung, pancreatic, pediatric, and prostate tumors.

Position Requirements:
EDUCATION AND
Experience:
Position requires Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science with two years as a radiation therapist preferred and certification in Medical Dosimetry, or certification eligible.
Must be able to articulate and demonstrate Basic, Intermediate and Highly Complex treatment planning techniques with competence by showing accuracy and the ability to complete in a timely manner.
LICENSE, CERTIFICATION AND/OR REGISTRATION:
CMD certification or certification eligible.
Certification must be obtained within 18 months of hire date.
Preferred:
ARRT with certification in Radiation Therapy TRAITS & SKILLS:
Must be methodical, articulate, conscientious, detail oriented and display good judgment.
Must be able to:
1) adapt to change and work quickly without producing errors; 2) action oriented to meet treatment planning deadlines; and 3) conscientious, caring and committed to quality patient care.
Pertinent skills required for this position are:
1) able to operate and understand the treatment planning system; 2) knowledge of the technical aspects of radiation oncology and medical physics necessary to derive radiation treatment plans, and the ability to communicate these aspects to the Radiation Oncologist for plan approval, and to the Radiation Therapist for treatment plan implementation; 3) ability to perform duties independent of supervision, or in consultation with the Manager of Dosimetry and Radiation Therapy Services, Medical Physicist and the Radiation Oncologist as required; 4) able to perform quality assurance, under the direction of the Medical Physicist, on the treatment planning computer; 5) working knowledge of radiation safety and current rules and regulations of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission; 6) ability to interpret and execute treatment plans as defined in relevant treatment protocols; 7) apply mathematical skills necessary for the treatment planning UA Health Services Foundation (UAHSF) is proud to be an AA/EOE/M/F/Vet/Disabled employer.
