The Senior Manager - Tax Compliance is a management level position in the Corporate Tax Department with responsibility for leading the Tax Department's overall effort to meet the income and franchise tax compliance responsibilities of HealthSouth Corporation, its affiliates and subsidiaries (the Company). The Senior Manager is also responsible for supporting the efforts of the Company to respond to notices and governmental audit documentation requests. Further, the Senior Manager is responsible for maintaining adequate documentation of all tax forms and associated workpapers in the Company's records.

The Senior Manager - Tax Compliance shall be responsible for supervising the corporate and partnership tax compliance processes. This includes formulating a staffing plan and schedule for all corporate and partnership tax returns, estimates and extensions and ensuring that all such filings are prepared consistently and accurately and are delivered to management with adequate time for final review, processing and signature before the filing due date. This position shall also be responsible for establishing, monitoring and maintaining policies and procedures relevant to the compliance process and for ensuring that such policies and procedures are consistent with internal control standards. Further, the Senior Manager will be responsible for maintaining all software and systems used by the Company in the preparation of the returns. This position must work proactively and effectively with other members of the tax management team to ensure proper integration of tax issues into the tax returns (i.e. coordination with Research & Planning to integrate transactions into the returns, coordination with Tax Accounting to integrate return-to-provision adjustments consistent with the returns, etc.).
This position is also a key member of the team that represents the Company in tax controversy matters and audits. In this capacity, the Senior Manager is responsible for overseeing the flow of notices in the tax department and will ensure that all notices are responded to in a timely and appropriate manner. The Senior Manager will maintain an inventory of governmental notices in OneSource Workflow and will be responsible for ensuring the notices are routed within the department (or to other departments, as appropriate) and that all notices are timely and accurately cleared. The Senior Manager will also support the Senior Manager - Tax Incentives & Controversy in the preparation and review of documentation provided to governmental entities pursuant to their audit requests and may be called upon to interface directly with governmental auditors on behalf of the Company.

As a member of the Tax Department management team, this position will be called upon to support other tax functions and initiatives including, but not limited to, review of periodic and annual financial statement tax provisions; special tax projects; review of non-income tax matters including sales, use, property and unclaimed property matters; participation in various human resources and administrative matters related to the Tax Department; other responsibilities within and outside of the Tax Department, as assigned.
The Senior Manager - Tax Compliance must make sure the tax compliance projects and processes supervised are adequately and timely staffed, completed, and delivered to the appropriate person or jurisdiction. This position must be aware of all relevant Company processes, procedures and controls (including internal controls over financial reporting) and is responsible for ensuring that such process, procedures and controls are maintained and followed for all matters under their supervision. This position frequently manages work performed by third party providers as part of the project work undertaken. License or Certification:
- Certified Public Accountant or Law degree required for individuals hired or promoted into this position.
- Other professional certifications are a plus.
Education, Training and Years of
Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Law degree required.
- Graduate degree preferred.
- 8 to 15 years of public accounting or corporate tax department experience required.
- Experience supervising others required.
- Experience with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, Outlook and Internet Explorer required.
- Extensive experience working with tax research and compliance software applications (e.g., OneSource, RIA Checkpoint, CCH Intelliconnect, Thomson Workflow, etc.) preferred.

Physical Requirements:
- Good visual acuity and ability to communicate.
- Ability to lift a minimum of 15 pounds and ability to push/pull a minimum of 25 pounds which includes the lifting, pushing and/or pulling of supplies and equipment. Reasonable assistance may be requested when lifting, pushing and/or pulling are undertaken which exceeds these minimum requirements.
Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent communication skills, expressing ideas clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing.

- Ability to work independently without supervision.
- Experience preparing and reviewing multistate consolidated corporate tax returns and partnership tax returns required.
- Experience advising healthcare companies on tax matters unique to the healthcare industry preferred.
- Knowledge/understanding of corporate and partnership financial accounting and tax treatment, including familiarity with corporate and partnership tax return forms and supporting schedules.
