Key Duties, RN, 2B/C, Oncology Clinic :
The Specialty Clinic 2B/C Staff Nurse assigned to chemotherapy infusion is a registered nurse who utilizes the nursing process, nursing skills/tasks to provide direct patient care and is responsible for the care of oncology patients with relief in the specialty clinic. Formulates and carries out an interdisciplinary plan and care, documents assessments, interventions, evaluations and referrals in the computerized patient record system (CPRS). Demonstrates ability to establish priorities, utilize time management and excellent interpersonal skills. Review and complete clinical performance guidelines and process improvement indicators. The Registered Nurse accurately and effectively triages patients who make unscheduled visits to the clinic, in order to provide optimum levels of care.
The incumbent will administer chemotherapy drugs and other infusions as ordered by the physician. Assesses and manages extravasations, identifies and manages side effects of drugs. Able to manage IVs , central lines, PICC and port-a-caths for the administration of chemotherapy and biologicals.
The RN assesses and treats patients with various diseases and conditions. Provides methods of venous access for the administration of chemotherapeutic agents, blood components, and intravenous drugs. Assesses the patient's emotional and spiritual needs through effective communication with the patient and significant others and offers the appropriate coping mechanisms and social support when necessary.
Qualifications/duties include strong educational, clinical skills and experience in the care of adult patients.
Knowledge with sound nursing judgment and ability to care for outpatients in oncology, pulmonary, endocrinology, and neurology. This registered nurse will demonstrate experience in staff and patient education, and possess effective communication skills and customer service practices.

Citizenship: Citizen of the United States (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens per VA Handbook 5005/2, Chapter 3, Section A, paragraph 3g).
Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant. The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Licensure : Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Physical Standards: Satisfactory physical examination as determined by the Employee Health Unit upon appointment only. See VA Directive and Handbook ). Functional requirements include light lifting under 15 lbs, light carrying 15-44 lbs, walking and standing and standing for up to 8 hours, use of rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, ability to read type written characters (glasses permitted), ability to hear the whispered voice (hearing aid permitted), repeated bending for up to 8 hours, etc.
Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. Bachelor of Science in Nursing
Minimum of one (1) year of medical/surgical experience
Minimum of two years experience administering chemotherapy
Experience in ambulatory surgery or outpatient clinic setting preferred
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written)
Demonstrated ability to assess and prioritize multiple medical and surgical diagnoses
Demonstrated excellence in physical assessment skills
Demonstrated ability to be dependable, self directed, and flexible, including flexibility in assignment and scheduling
Current BLS certification
Professional nursing certification in area of practice
Excellent customer service skills

Nurse I, level I-Associate Degree or diploma in nursing; no experience
Nurse I, level 2-Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing, approx. 1 year experience OR Associate Degree in Nursing and a Bachelors in a related field, no experience, OR BSN, no experience
Nurse I, Level 3-Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing, approx. 2-3 years experience OR Associates Degree or Diploma in Nursing and Bachelors degree in a related field, approx. 1-2 years experience OR BSN, approx. 1-2 years experience OR MSN or related field with a BSN or Bachelor's degree in related field, no experience.
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.
