RN (Assistant Nurse Manager)-SPS

The Supervisory RN coordinates and/or plans, manages and controls sterile processing and distribution management duties as assigned in support of all SPS programs for patient care critical and semi-critical, instruments, and equipment received, processed packaged, and distributed. The role involves clinical, administrative, research and educational components, which impact patient and healthcare personnel throughout the health care system. Duties include but are not limited to:
Responsibility and accountability for the 24/7 operations and delivery of nursing care of the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) department. Fact finding and follow-up for unit events within 24 hours and reporting to Nurse Manager and Chief Nurse. Communicating all relevant events and information to Nurse Manager and Chief Nurses. Oversight of all assigned work of subordinates, including work assignments and breaks. Serves as a clinical expert within the Sterile Processing Service to assist all clinical services within the facility to ensure instrumentation used to provide care can be sterilized per the guidelines set forth by NPOSP and Manufacturers IFUs. Orders appropriate instrument trays for care delivery. Unit Assistant Manager and leader for SPS teams, including staff, educators, lead technicians, etc., in provision of Veteran care in the SPS department. Schedules developed and posted a minimum of 14 days prior to assignment. Ensues department is staffed utilizing IAHCSMM guidelines. Grants leave and posting time per established policy and time lines. Resolves all leave exceptions within pay period in all timekeeping systems. Completes and submits unit time and attendance reports with recommended actions by 15th of month following end of quarter. Writes and submits proficiencies and performance evaluations within established time frames and by established policy. Recognizes staff through informal and formal awards and recognition venues (5 Star, Nurse Excellence, Employee of the Month, etc.). Manages performance and discipline, including counseling and recommendation of disciplinary actions. Manages and documenting comprehensive orientation of new staff. Identifies educational and professional growth needs of staff. Performance based interviewing and timely selection of high quality candidates. Ensures required competency, certification and licensure of all subordinate staff. Maintenance of competency folders. Unit compliance with infection control measures. Completion of ASSIST for work related incidence. Rounding daily in all areas of SPS to all reprocessing areas within the facility. Ensures the provision of appropriate critical and semi critical equipment and supplies for processing of semi-critical and critical instrumentation to support customer needs/Veteran care. Ensures appropriate and timely documents for equipment requests. Ensures environment of care is compliant with governing standards and policy. Works collaboratively with Environmental Management Service and Engineering to resolve structural, equipment and environmental deficiencies within the department. Work Schedule:

The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. The population of male and female veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over. The VA Medical Center is a major interdisciplinary teaching facility, serving medical, surgical, and neurological inpatients and outpatients. There is a large outpatient psychiatric population, with admissions for medical co-morbidities. This position requires visual acuity (glasses permitted), keen hearing (hearing aid permitted), clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures, or home settings. Use of rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
